An Interview with Tilly Davis, Compliance Officer at Immersive

Tilly Davis initially joined Immersive on the Engineering team, but when happenstance sparked her interest in the wonderful world of compliance, she found her true calling. As her four year anniversary at Immersive approaches, we sat down with Tilly to learn more about her time here:

Tilly’s Journey to Compliance

Hi Tilly! You’ve had a brilliant but rather unconventional career path at Immersive during your four years (more on that shortly). What do you enjoy most about working here?

Honestly, it’s knowing and working with the people here. Naturally because of my role, I speak with people from all across the business; experiencing different ideas, perspectives and seeing how each team operates. There is a warm, community feel here - a want to ensure that everyone is heard, supported, and feels safe regardless of who they are.

The inclusivity I feel at Immersive is incredibly important to me - it’s a core value that the company truly embodies. I am so grateful to work with many others that feel the same way.

We hinted at this before, but you joined Immersive as a Quality Engineer, how did you end up in Compliance?

Most of my career has actually been spent in software testing! I originally joined Immersive as a Quality Engineer in the Engineering team; shortly after joining, I was introduced to the world of Compliance due to my work laptop being chosen for external certification testing.

I have always been an advocate for process improvement, and curious about why things are the way they are. So I approached the Risk, Security, and Compliance team, asked questions, collaborated on projects, and fortunately a job opportunity came up - I applied, and here I am!

And for those that don’t know, what does a Compliance Officer do?

As a Compliance Officer I am here to help enable and protect the business; to ensure that we operate in an effective, secure, legally and financially responsible way. A big part of that is ensuring that we can evidence that we do what we say we do - we want our customers to know that we comply with requirements, be they legal, financial, or our own policies to establish a deeper trust in our business.

My tasks can involve anything from reviewing our policies, to exploring new legislation and what it could mean for Immersive.

We’re so pleased you’ve ended up on the Compliance team, you’re a natural! What has your transition to the Compliance team been like?

Having the support of my past and present managers has been incredibly encouraging, they’ve truly made the change seamless. While I worked in Engineering, I was supported to attend a course and became an accredited internal auditor. This helped me develop relevant skills, and gain direction on how I could implement internal auditing at Immersive. I felt so prepared to start my new role in Compliance.

What do you wish people knew about working in Compliance?

Working in Compliance has been so fulfilling - I am so proud of my team and the work we do. It may not sound glamorous, but it brings so many benefits to an organisation - encouraging reflection and process improvements. Our job is making sure that we are always reflecting on the way we do business - we ask the tough questions so we can do business better.

Benefits and Beyond

As you know, Immersive offers a range of different benefits, how have you used your benefits in the past year?

I truly value and appreciate the variety of benefits available to us at Immersive. Using my Workspace Optimization Fund, I’ve invested in an ergonomic desk chair - a life-changing spend since it’s where I spend most of my day! I also have thoroughly enjoyed some company Volunteering Days helping out at various city farms over the years.

Love to hear how you’re using your benefits! What are some of your favorite things to do after work?

You’ll usually find me on my PC playing games; I love a good RPG, horror game, or point-and-click adventure! I also shamelessly play Runescape every day…

Apart from gaming, I spend a lot of my time cuddling my two cats (whether they like it or not) and painting Warhammer 40k minis, even dabbling in amateur voice acting for animated things online from time to time.

Parting Words

It’s been a pleasure speaking with you today! Before I let you go, what advice would you give someone considering a career at Immersive?

My advice would be to digest our values - ask yourself, do they resonate with you? Are you open to hearing different perspectives, and challenging your own? Are you passionate about supporting the vision to empower anyone and everyone to detect, and recover from cyber threats? If the answer is always yes, then hey, you’re in the right place!

Thank you, Tilly!
