Prove and Improve: How NYU and Immersive Joined Forces to Put Cyber Readiness to the Test
Theory alone is not enough to prepare the next generation of cyber defenders. The ever-widening skills gap demands a new approach one grounded in practical, hands-on experience. To bridge this divide, New York University (NYU) and Immersive joined forces to deliver a hyper-realistic cyber crisis simulation, putting skills to the test and proving the power of experiential learning. The goal was to empower students to not just learn, but to prove their skills, improve their capabilities, and be ready for the challenges of the real world.
The Partnership: A Shared Commitment to Readiness
Immersive’s mission to help organizations continuously measure and enhance their human cyber capabilities aligns perfectly with the academic and practical goals of NYU, a leader in cybersecurity education and innovation.
At the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, the Master’s in Cybersecurity program is built on providing real-world solutions grounded in strong theoretical foundations. As a designated NSA Center of Academic Excellence, NYU Tandon is at the forefront of cybersecurity innovation, offering immersive experiences through initiatives like the NYU Center for Cybersecurity and the student-run OSIRIS Lab.
The partnership between Immersive and NYU began in 2018 through our Cyber Million initiative, which is a program that tackles cyber talent shortage. Through Cyber Million, NYU Tandon students gain free access to the Immersive platform to sharpen their skills. Since 2018, 2,500 NYU students have used the platform, with NYU Tandon awarding a unique Cyber Million badge to students who complete all of the defensive cybersecurity labs.
This long-standing collaboration and shared vision made Immersive the ideal partner for NYU's latest challenge: hosting a joint Cyber Drill. NYU Tandon sought a dynamic, applied learning opportunity that would extend beyond the virtual classroom, especially for its online Master’s students who are balancing full-time careers with their studies. This drill was designed to be more than just a technical exercise; it was an opportunity for students to step into real-world roles, respond to threats under pressure, and sharpen the readiness needed for their careers.
The Cyber Drill in Action: A High-Stakes Scenario
The Cyber Drill was designed to simulate a high-stakes, real-world incident in a corporate environment.
● The Scenario: Participants were cast as the senior leadership team at Orchid Corp, a fictional SSL/TLS certificate authority. They were tasked with managing a dynamic and escalating cyber attack to minimize its impact on the company’s critical infrastructure and its global clients, which included banks, airlines, and energy companies.
● The Format: The goal was to recreate the fast-paced feel of a cybersecurity operations center. Students navigated between a virtual lobby, interactive webinars, and breakout rooms that represented different phases of the incident response.
● The Participants: The drill brought together cybersecurity students from NYU’s fully online M.S.program as well as on-campus peers, making for a truly integrated and collaborative experience.
● The Objectives: The drill had a dual focus. Students had to execute technical incident response using industry-standard tools in a cyber range. Simultaneously, they were exposed to the strategic decisions that executive leadership faces during a crisis. To ensure they were ready, students received pre-program materials and access to foundational labs on the Immersive platform.
Proving Readiness: Leadership Under Pressure
The Cyber Drill was an opportunity for students to prove their readiness by stepping into the reality of managing a live cyber crisis. The event kicked off with a keynote from a senior cybersecurity executive from one of NYU Tandon’s industry partners, whose insights into the high-stakes nature of real-world cyberattacks set the stage for the simulation.
The drill was designed to test more than just technical acumen. It emphasized how human factors like leadership style, communication, and team coordination can dramatically influence a crisis outcome.
Key learning outcomes required participants to:
● Execute technical incident response procedures in an evolving threat landscape.
● Collaborate on mitigation strategies to minimize operational disruption.
● Demonstrate strategic thinking under pressure, with the understanding that their decisions could shape the severity of the incident's impact.
Students walked away with more than just sharper technical skills; they gained a profound understanding of the leadership and decision-making required in high-risk environments. It was an experience designed to prepare them to lead confidently, wherever their careers may take them.
Improving Capabilities: The Value of Iterative Learning
At NYU Tandon, the focus is on bridging the gap between academic theory and professional readiness. In a field like cybersecurity, where the threat landscape shifts daily, this hands-on approach is essential.
Simulations like Cyber Drills are critical to helping students (and cybersecurity practitioners) improve their capabilities. In allowing students to apply knowledge in a safe yet realistic environment, this method moves beyond simple skill reinforcement to promote iterative learning, where students can test, reflect, and refine their responses over time. It builds the confidence and agility required to lead under pressure—qualities that cannot be taught through lectures alone.
NYU Tandon is committed to integrating these high-impact training experiences into the online student journey, ensuring every student has access to the tools that will help them thrive in the workforce.
The Bigger Picture: A Model for the Future
The success of the NYU and Immersive Cyber Drill serves as a model for the powerful partnerships needed between academia and industry to close the cybersecurity skills gap. Realistic, exercise-based learning is critical to developing a resilient workforce.
Continuous readiness matters across all sectors—education, public, and private. By providing iterative, hands-on training that challenges individuals and teams to prove and improve their skills, we can ensure the next generation of cybersecurity professionals is not just certified, but truly ready to face tomorrow’s threats.
